Well yesterday morning it happened. We saw the first piece of the old Hood Canal Bridge float by as it headed north. It was surreal in a way: a piece of road being hustled away by two tugs in the gray dawn, with light stanchions and traffic signs still attached. We can still look across the Hood Canal at Kitsap County from our home in Jefferson County, but with that piece of road missing, it is now a couple of hours away by car.
I haven't yet tried the passenger ferry and shuttle bus to reach my car parked in Kitsap County. I'll do that next Monday. From that first trip I should know how to time my travels for appointments on each side of the canal. I'm sure we will adjust to the new travel methods - one can tolerate almost anything for six weeks. But I'll be happy when we see the last piece of the new bridge float by headed south.
